The first successful winter expedition to Gasherbrum II, led by Mr. Simone Moro and organized by Hunza Guides Pakistan, took place during the winter of 2010–2011. Gasherbrum II is the 13th-highest mountain in the world, located in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan.
This expedition was a historic achievement, as Gasherbrum II had never before been successfully climbed in winter. The team faced numerous challenges, including severe weather conditions, extreme cold, and the effects of high altitude. Despite these difficulties, their experience, skill, and determination enabled them to overcome all obstacles and reach the summit on February 2, 2011.
The expedition team consisted of Simone Moro (Italy), Denis Urubko (Kazakhstan), and Corey Richards (USA). They spent several weeks acclimatizing and preparing before making their final summit push. Using a combination of fixed ropes and advanced alpine climbing techniques, the team successfully ascended to the summit, which rises to an elevation of 8,035 meters (26,362 feet) above sea level.
The successful winter ascent of Gasherbrum II marked a major milestone not only for the climbers but also for Pakistan. It highlighted the country’s potential for winter mountaineering and showcased its breathtaking natural beauty and warm hospitality.
Hunza Guides Pakistan, the local company that organized the expedition, is widely recognized for its expertise in managing high-altitude mountaineering expeditions. The company has played a key role in promoting tourism in the Hunza region and supporting local communities through sustainable tourism initiatives. The success of the Gasherbrum II winter expedition stands as a testament to their professionalism, commitment, and dedication to advancing adventure tourism in Pakistan.
