Nanga Parbat Expedition- (Rupal Face)

“Nanga Parbat, standing at 8,126 meters and known locally as Diamer, translates to ‘Naked Mountain,’ though it’s affectionately referred to as the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ of the Western Himalayan Mountain Range. Situated south of the Indus River in the Diamer district of Gilgit Baltistan, Nanga Parbat gained notoriety after a tragic incident in 1937 when twelve climbers and eighteen Sherpas lost their lives on its slopes, earning it the nickname ‘killer mountain.’ However, in 1953, an Austrian/German expedition led by Hermann Buhl successfully summited Nanga Parbat in the summer, marking the mountain’s first ascent. Since then, climbers from around the globe have tackled its formidable slopes. Nanga Parbat ranks as Pakistan’s second-highest peak after K2 and stands as the ninth highest peak globally.

The first successful winter ascent of Nanga Parbat occurred on February 26, 2016, achieved by a team comprising Ali Sadpara from Pakistan, Alex Txikon from Spain, and Simone Moro from Italy.

Nanga Parbat boasts three gigantic faces: the Raikot East face, the Diamer West face route, and the Rupal South face, with Herligkoffer Base Camp situated at the highest elevation of 4,600 meters. Additionally, Nanga Parbat offers three beautiful moderate treks, including the trek around its base.

The journey to Nanga Parbat typically involves a 10 to 12-hour drive from Islamabad to Chilas, followed by a 2 to 3-hour drive covering 129 kilometers from Chilas to Astore. From there, it’s another 30 kilometers, taking approximately 5 to 6 hours, to reach Tarashing village. Over the course of 5 to 6 days, trekkers complete the picturesque moderate trek from Tarashing to Herlingkoffer Base Camp, passing through Shaigiri, Latoba, Mazeno Base Camp, and returning to Tarashing.”

Overview of Spantik Expedition

Spantik Peak (7,027m), also known as the Golden Peak, offers one of the most rewarding climbing experiences in Pakistan. The ascent via the South-East Ridge is often described as a “three-in-one” adventure because Camps I, II, and III are set on mini summits, each offering breathtaking 360° panoramic views of the Karakoram mountains.

Difficulty Level: Spantik is graded at the AD level, requiring prior high-altitude mountaineering experience. Climbers should be physically fit, mentally resilient, and comfortable working in independent roped parties. While our professional team provides fixed ropes for glacier sections (45–50° slopes) and full support, participants are encouraged to contribute to camp setup and high-altitude tasks. Previous experience on 6,000m peaks is highly recommended for safe acclimatization and summit success.

The expedition typically spans 18–20 days on the mountain, with the primary goal of reaching Spantik’s 7,027m summit. High camps are strategically placed:

• Camp I – ~4,450m, located near the Chogolungma Glacier. • Camp II – ~5,300m, offering a spectacular ridge-top panorama. • Camp III – ~6,050m, the final staging point before the summit push.

From Camp III, climbers face a 950-meter ascent to the summit, usually completed in a single day. The rotation between camps ensures proper acclimatization, increasing the chances of success. Tasks such as setting and dismantling camps are managed collectively by the climbers, support staff, and guides, fostering strong teamwork and expedition spirit.

The challenges of this climb include altitude, cold temperatures, unpredictable weather, and technical glacier travel. However, the rewards are immense—stunning sunrises, sweeping glacier views, and the sense of achievement of standing atop one of the Karakoram’s most beautiful peaks.

Joining the Spantik Expedition with Hunza Guides means embarking on a safe, fully supported, and unforgettable adventure in Pakistan’s Karakoram. With decades of experience, our team ensures the right balance of guidance, logistics, and authentic mountaineering spirit for every climber.

Passu Peak Expedition

The best time for climbing Passu Peak is from June to September.

Passu Sar or Passu Peak, standing at 7,284 meters, is a mountain peak located in the Batura Muztagh, a sub-range of the Karakoram mountain range. It is situated in the Gilgit District of the Northern Areas of Pakistan, to the west of the Hunza Valley. Passu Peak marks the highest point of the Passu massif, which also includes Passu Diar (or “Passu East”, “Pasu II”). Positioned on the main ridge of the Batura Muztagh, Passu Peak is approximately 7 kilometers (4 miles) east of Batura Sar.

The first successful ascent of Passu Peak occurred on August 7, 1994, by Max Wallner, Dirk Naumann, Ralf Lehmann, and Volker Wurnig.

The route from base camp to camp 1 traverses many ice walls and crevasses, particularly in proximity to camp 1. From advanced base camp (ABC) to camp 1, professional and experienced climbers must carefully navigate to find the exact route and secure ropes for the remaining team members. This process can be time-consuming due to the need to navigate through ice walls and crevasses. A minimum of 500 to 700 meters of rope (depending on group size), ice screws, snow tubes, and other necessary equipment is required. Climbers must be roped together for safety. It is advisable to carry two ladders in case crevasses widen during the ascent.
